Idle Hours Bookshop

Nestled in the heart of downtown South Bend, Idle Hours is where readers get lost in the magical world of books. The shop guarantees you’ll find what you’re looking for, with a few surprises mixed in.

Floor-to-ceiling shelves feature nearly every genre imaginable, while the sales tables offer unbeatable bargains. Stumped about what to read? The friendly staff will gladly offer suggestions and information about the most popular authors.

Brain Lair Books

Brain Lair is a small bookstore where everyone knows your name. Owner Kathy Burnette offers a welcoming atmosphere, and she always curates titles that everyone enjoys.

Before opening the shop, she worked as a school librarian for almost 20 years. Founding Brain Lair was the culmination of a lifelong dream, and Kathy reads nearly every book that makes its way onto the shelves. She also hosts book clubs, discussion groups, as well as author signings.

Busy and on the go this holiday season? Get your read as an e-book or better yet, enjoy it in audio form. You can also sign up for the Brain Lair subscription service, which includes carefully curated fiction and non-fiction works every quarter. You can either have the books shipped to you or picked up at the store.

Griffon Bookstore

Spanning four floors, the Griffon Bookstore has been a local favorite since 1976. It offers both new and used books. You’ll find mysteries, science fiction works, classical literature, and an extensive selection of military history titles here. You may also come across out-of-print books and bargain deals for just 25 cents each.

Griffon is also recognized as a pioneer in the retail gaming industry. It’s home to one of the country’s oldest continuously running game rooms. The Griffon Game Room can accommodate over 50 players at a time and has hosted countless numbers of RPG (role-playing games), board games, and card tournaments.
