The next time you need fresh groceries, consider taking a short trip to the South Bend Farmer’s Market. Just under thirty minutes away from the Main Street Village Apartments, you’ll have access to one of the largest and most diverse markets in the Midwest. The South Bend Farmer’s Market is one of the best places in the area to buy farm-grown vegetables, eggs, artisan baked goods, and more.
Incorporated in 1924, the market actually began at the Colfax Street Bridge in 1911. By 1923, it outgrew the location and moved to its present site several years later. Today’s market features ninety-six stalls, many of which have been owned and operated by the same families for generations. Some of its most well-known vendors include:
Hetler Farms
Hetler farms is a family farm that has been in operation since 1917. Today, it’s run by brothers Curt and Mark Hetler. The farm grows a variety of crops including sweet corn, watermelon, and cantaloupe. Also available for purchase are fresh flowers such as violas and pansies. The brothers’ favorite part of selling at the market is interacting with returning customers– it makes them feel they are doing something right.
Sweet Street
Family owned and operated, Sweet Street Caramel & Coffee Cafe specializes in old-fashioned cheese corn, kettle corn, and caramel corn. The Tootie Fruittie variety is an excellent choice for those who can’t decide on a single flavor.
Sawyer’s Meat
Sawyer’s Meat has been a market staple for 86 years! The booth is particularly famous for its ring bologna recipe and Sawyer Big City Gourmet Burgers. Shoppers will also find applewood smoked bacon, German sausage, cheese, and more.
Maple Land Farms
Owned by Irvin and Carol Lemler, Maple Land Farms is named after the property’s forty-acre woods and the maple syrup production that makes up part of the couple’s diversified farming operation. Depending on the season, they offer black walnuts, gourds, and fresh-cut flowers.
