The Compton Family Ice Arena
The Compton Family Ice Arena opened in 2011. That year, the Notre Dame hockey team took to the ice in front of a sold-out crowd. This state-of-the-art facility has two rinks: the Charles “Lefty” Smith Rink (which hosts the Notre Dame hockey program) and an Olympic-sized rink (which serves the public). The “Lefty” Smith Rink has 4,500 seats and 522 standing-room spaces, while the Olympic-sized rink seats 350. Visitors who use the public rink have access to 4 locker rooms with restrooms and showers. Ice Box Skating Rink
The Ice Box Skating Rink was voted the best ice rink in Indiana in 2016. The rink’s mission is to make ice hockey, figure skating, and public skating easily accessible and affordable to all. Not surprisingly, it’s often the site of regional tournaments and competitions. Public skate sessions are offered at various times, and lessons are available for all skill levels. Hockey players can also sign up for power skating and agility training sessions here.
NIBCO Water and Ice Park
The NIBCO Water and Ice Park is located in nearby Elkhart and is one of the city’s most renowned treasures. The scenic Elkhart River serves as a gorgeous backdrop for this popular park. Visitors enjoy untold hours of skating fun here every winter, and trainers are available for anyone looking to enhance their skills. The park is open Friday through Sunday, and admission is just $5 for adults (18 and over). The park stocks over 200 pairs of rental skates in all sizes for the public’s convenience.
