What would a summer be without a county fair? With the hottest season of the year fast approaching, the days are getting longer and the nights are heating up. If you’re looking for things to do near Granger, check out the St. Joseph County 4-H Fair in South Bend. This nine-day event (held June 30th through July 8th this year) features a variety of activities and shows for everyone. You’d be hard-pressed to not find at least one activity or event here for each person in your family or group of friends.
Getting out of town for something out of the ordinary is always exciting. Below are a few of the shows, but not a complete list. Be sure to check out the complete list of shows to find something up your alley.
Bear Hollow Wood Carvers – This talented team of woodcarvers hail from states all across the nation – from California to Massachusetts and many in between. Watch this exciting show where these artists create intricate works of art by carving large wood logs with just a chainsaw. They tour all around the country. And though they are visiting some locations for a few days, they will be in South Bend the entire time, June 30 thru July 8.
Jurassic Kingdom – This interactive show will feature a life-size, walking Tyrannosaurus Rex. It has historically captivated the attention of both adults and children. Watch a dinosaur hatch from an egg, view fossils, and much more with this exciting trip back to prehistoric times. You can attend this show July 1 thru July 8.
Have you ever been to a county fair without music? While the sounds of the animals in the barns can be entertaining, it’s nice to change things up with music for our ears. Here are just a few of the performers who will be there this year.
Dwayne Spaw – A country music entertainer, Dwayne Spaw has been performing for 17 years. He has shared the stage with some of today’s biggest artists, including Keith Urban, Blake Shelton, and Jason Aldean. Dwayne will be roaming the fairgrounds, singing live music daily.
The Indigos – Performing June 30 thru July 3, this 10-piece funk rock band comes from the local region, in Muncie, Indiana. They have played in famous venues such as The Viper Room in Hollywood, California.
County fairs seem to be complete with music, food, animals, a rodeo and a demolition derby.
Demolition Derby – Witness the destruction as these cars deliberately crash into each other over and over again until only one remains. This is a one-day event only, happening July 4th. It’s not the quietest event you’ll attend at the county fair, so bring earplugs if you’re sensitive to noise.
St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo – This not-for-profit organization, commissioned by the sheriff, is an important part of the community. Come watch as the Sheriff’s Posse exhibits their skills in all things rodeo. What makes this truly unique is that the members are not compensated for their time, or the use of their own animals and equipment. This makes it a true community event.
